Description
Students are conducting a research project at two different nature parks in Johnson County, Cedar Niles and Shawnee Mission Park, to find out how human activity and hardwood tree abundance impact the flying squirrel populations. Shawnee Mission Park has more foot-traffic and Cedar Niles has more hardwood trees, which provides comparison of human activity impacts as well as hardwood abundance on flying squirrel behavior. The methods used for this project are acoustic monitoring, trail cameras, and bait traps. This research is important for the parks to understand, so they can make changes to serve both the people who visit as well as flying squirrel populations.
