Description
The purpose of this project is to make progress in advancing knowledge of antibiotic producing bacteria in a soil sample. Most of the antibiotics in use today have been around for decades, or longer, and bacterial resistance to these antibiotics are on the rise. This project allows us to investigate our self-collected samples in hopes of finding a new antibiotic. During this process, several candidates were identified from the species found in the soil sample. These candidates showed areas of inhibition, indication that they produce an antibiotic, keeping other microbes at a distance on the 50% Tryptic Soy Agar plate. Further screening against bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli, allowed one candidate to be selected for testing and identification.
