Description
There is an increasing amount of antibiotic resistance being observed in sickness-causing microbes. To combat this, we took samples of microbes from soil and screened them to try and observe any kind of antibiotic-producing qualities. For my research, I used soil from my front porch. Using that soil, I isolated microbes, observed their characteristics, and chose one candidate out of 12 that exhibited abilities to inhibit dangerous pathogens. To find that one candidate, I had to choose from multiple that exhibited the same qualities. Once the candidate was chosen, it was identified using Polymerase Chain Reactions and Gel Electrophoresis. This research has the potential to make advances in antibiotic development.
