Description
Sheet metal is an essential part of modern manufacturing, utilized in everything from automotive bodies to everyday household appliances. It is extremely versatile with its high strength yet low weight, and the ease with which it can be shaped and contorted into any shape. The goal of this project is to learn more about the process of engineering by creating a 2D layout pattern of a lamp, using sheet metal. I have three main objectives to follow: The Process: Describing the manufacturing techniques required to transform flat stock into a finished product, including cutting, forming, joining, and finishing. The Design: Creating a precise 2D flat layout pattern (template) that, when folded, results in the 3D lamp structure. Manufacturing Optimization: Determining the most efficient layout for producing multiple units to minimize sheet-metal waste and calculating the percent waste.
