Description

The growing rise of antibiotic resistance and threat from ESKAPE pathogens has led to a lack of effective antibiotics. The Small World Initiative was created as a way to enable students to learn about microbiology while examining soil samples looking for markers that could lead to a possible new antibiotic. I gathered my soil sample from my own backyard and spent time testing it for antibiotic properties in microbiology lab. The Small World Initiative brings together schools across the country and is able to obtain and test a variety of soil samples, furthering our research for new antibiotics.
