Description

Southern flying squirrels have been documented and seen in Kansas for many years. Since they are nocturnal researchers must conduct an experiment using various techniques to catch footage of the flying squirrel. The purpose of this experiment would be to further prove evidence of their existence in Johnson County Kansas. To do this, researchers must place cameras and acoustic microphones to pick up the pitch of the squirrel. Nest boxes were also made for researchers to attract the squirrel. The overall goal is to find out if predators have any effect on whether the squirrels will have reduced presence of detection rates. In previous research by prior researchers trees and nesting played a factor as well. Researchers anticipate the flying squirrel to not be affected by predation but there will be less activity in certain parks compared to recent years.
