Description
For this research project, a soil sample was evaluated for bacteria content that may produce antibiotic properties. Serial dilution of the soil sample was used to suspend the soil's microbes in water and extract them to be grown on agar plates. The growth of microbes on agar plates allowed for candidates of antibiotic resistance to be chosen due to their inhibition zones around other organisms. These candidates were isolated on master plates for further antibiotic screenings using safe relatives of the ESKAPE pathogens. The candidate with the most promising inhibition zones, when placed on the same agar plate as the safe relatives, was selected for further testing. Metabolic testing, PCR, and gelelectropoesis were used to determine the identity of this candidate.
