Description
Soil is an abundant resource throughout the world, and due to its availability and high bacterial count, this research project focuses on finding antibiotics found in local soil samples. Starting with a small soil sample, serial dilutions were performed to cultivate microbes, which then underwent antibiotic screenings using safe relatives. Using the bacteria which showed zones of inhibition, and single bacteria colony was obtained through a screening plate and was subjected to PCR gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing. These steps were taken to determine if the local soil contains antibiotics and to identify bacteria. This information is crucial for scientists to determine if the local environment contains antibiotics which could be used in future research.
