Description

Antibiotics are probably one of the best things that man has discovered. Without them infections would run rampant. This research project aims to target this problem. In this project a sample of soil was taken from a backyard and diluted to grow colonies of bacteria. Those colonies were then tested against the safe relatives of the ESKAPE pathogens which are safe relatives of highly resistant bacterial strains. If they showed zones of inhibition, they were producing an antibiotic. The candidates then went through PCR for sequencing and were confirmed through gel electrophoresis. Maybe, one of these days, JCCC students will discover a new antibiotic medicine right in their own backyard.
