Description
For this project, we are looking for potential antibiotics that are found in nature. We first started by collecting a dirt sample from an area of ground around us. We then serial diluted 1 gram of dirt into 5 test tubes. After this we spread 1 mL of the dirt/water solution on to a petri plate and waited for growth. We then would transfer colonies that looked like they had zones of inhibition onto a new petri plate. This would be called the master plate A. We then narrowed our selection of colonies from master plate A and took promising looking colonies and transferred them to a new petri plate (master plate B). We then made streak plates to see how strong the colony grows. Once we have a colony that inhibits other colonies we tested it against a variety of other organisms in class to see if it inhibits their growth or not. If our colony inhibits the growth of other organisms, we may have a potential antibiotic.
