Description
The Small World Initiative (SWI) partners with colleges nationwide to merge a student's study of a soil sample with an intentional focus on bacteria and potential antibiotics within that sample. To that end, I have serial diluted my soil sample, then subcultured promising candidates. A series of antibiotic screenings against my candidates and several tester strains, representing ESKAPE pathogens, allowed candidates with potentially antibiotic properties to come to the forefront. These candidates were then cultured onto separate streak plates to create pure cultures to allow for PCR testing to determine that particular gene's sequencing. Gene sequencing revealed if the candidate was known to science or not, and what its family most likely was. More tests and evaluations followed, allowing for a greater understanding of the characteristics of the candidate.
