Description

Is the basin filtering metals out of the water? Since building the college, along with other housing, and retail centers, rainwater is unable to infiltrate the soil, and when it does it is contaminated. As rainwater washes down the parking lot, into the stormwater basin, the water picks up debris and other containments. The water is then washed through rocks and native grasses to filter. To find out if the basin is actually filtering metals out of the water, a series of tests were conducted on the basin and drain water. After comparing the data collected from the basin and drain water, we found that the levels of certain metals in the water samples decreased once they reached the drain. These metals were Iron and copper. Along with these findings we concluded that the pH of the water became more neutral after being filtered by the basin. These results prove that the stormwater basin is successfully lowering the levels of metal contaminants in the water, as well as neutralizing the water.
