Description
Antibiotic resistance is becoming a very pressing issue in modern medicine. In order to further investigate and possibly prevent this issue, research was completed in a microbiology lab. The goal of this research was to attempt to discover a new antimicrobial agent from a soil sample collected by students. Various methods were used to obtain these agents, including serial dilution of soil samples as well as screening candidate microbes against safe relatives of ESKAPE pathogens (pathogens that are responsible for a vast majority of nosocomial or hospital-acquired infections, and pose serious health risks to humans). In order to identify the obtained candidate microbes, genomic sequencing and testing was completed. These discoveries may be of use when attempting to uncover new antibiotics in the future, and may aid in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
