Description
During this semester, we were tasked to collect a soil sample and bring it to class to culture the microbes within the soil. The entire purpose of this activity was to find colonies that have the ability to create zones of inhibition. These zones of inhibition inhibit the growth of other bacteria. Once a potential candidate has been found, they are aseptically transferred to a petri dish that has been swabbed by an antibiotic-resistant bacterium. These antibiotic-resistant infections are known as ESKAPE pathogens. However, these bacteria are highly virulent. So, we will instead be testing our candidates on the safe relatives; they share many of the same metabolic characteristics. After testing our candidates against safe relatives, we want to identify what our candidates are.
