Description
Researchers must continue to search for new antibiotics to help combat the growing global health crisis of antibiotic resistance. We as students are aiding in this antibiotic discovery by cultivating soil microbes in hopes that at least one of those microbes shows promising inhibition against one or more of the six safe relatives of the ESKAPE pathogens. Serial dilutions were performed in order to find our top twelve candidates showing good zones of inhibition against other microbes within the soil. After performing antibiotic screenings against all six safe relatives of the ESKAPE pathogens, my top candidate ended up showing inhibition against four of those six pathogens. Multiple tests will then be performed with this candidate including different staining techniques, PCR tests, metabolic tests, and others to provide further data on what exactly our bacteria is to hopefully further contribute to this antibiotic discovery.
