Description
My research project is important because the medial field needs more antibiotics to overcome pathogens that have developed antibiotic resistance. The purpose of my research is to find a novel organism that would produce a novel antibiotic. I have collected soil from a lawn in Olathe, Kansas and performed serial dilutions to determine microbes that could produce antibiotics. I am screening multiple candidates that may produce novel antibiotics. Currently, I am characterizing one interesting candidate through PCR and sequencing analysis.
