Description
This project was done in the hopes of finding new bacteria that can be used to produce antibiotics to treat diseases. Superbugs are now a tremendous problem in modern day medicine. These superbugs are resistant to our known antibiotics making them extremely deadly with no real treatment. The most notable superbugs are the ESKAPE pathogens. I have isolated a species of bacteria from a soil sample that was taken here locally in Kansas that has shown promising qualities to be used as an antibiotic. Most noticeably, my antibiotic candidate I named Garchomp has shown it can inhibit the growth of 3 of the 6 ESKAPE pathogens relatives. The exact species and genus as well as if this bacteria can be used to help fight the superbug epidemic will be presented the day of the symposium as my research is ongoing.
