Description
In order to find a bacterial organism that produced antibiotic compounds, several experiments were performed. Starting with a soil sample from Shawnee, KS, serial dilutions were made and spread plates from the dilutions were incubated. From these plates, antibiotic producing bacteria were identified and isolated on a master plate. These candidates were tested on lawns of growth of safe relatives of ESKAPE pathogens; one candidate showed a zone of inhibition in Staphylococcus epidermidis. Single pure colonies of the candidate were isolated using a quadrant streak, and upon staining and microscopic observation the candidate was seen to be Gram variable and endospore forming. Metabolic testing and genome sequencing are the next steps to establish the genus of the organism and provide additional information about the candidate.
