Description

Antibiotic resistance is a very big struggle within the field of microbiology and medicine. Antibiotic resistant bacteria can infect the human body and we run out of ways to treat it, due to the lack of research done on this certain area anymore. It is important to search for new microbes that inhibit the growth of other microbes so we can do further research to create new antibiotics. I took a soil sample collected by myself and another collected by Heather Seitz, and through serial dilution found possible candidates that were tested against safe relatives of known antibiotic resistant infections that happen in healthcare settings. A total of 11 candidates were taken from 5 different serial dilution plates that came from 2 separate soil sample collections. Out of all the candidates, candidate 11 was the microbe that inhibited every safe relative of antibiotic resistant infections except for one. This candidate will be further tested to find out genetic information about it and what specific type of microbe it is, using a phylogenic tree.
