Description
The purpose of this project is to focus on how nutrition can be used as an alternative treatment for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurologic disease in which there are abnormal brain waves that then cause seizures. There are many anti-epileptic drugs available but choosing the right medication is complicated and might not work for some people. Studies have shown diets high in fat and low in carbohydrates like the ketogenic and modified Adkins diet have been shown to reduce seizures. Electrolyte imbalances also play a role in the manifestation of seizures. Seizures are more common in people with electrolyte imbalances such as hyponatremia, hypocalcemia, and hypomagnesemia. So, by finding foods high in these things can help to reduce the risks of seizures.
