Description
Today, the number of bacteria that are becoming antibiotics resistant has far surpassed the number of antibiotics able to treat them. New and novel antibiotics may be the only hope for stopping the impending threat of incurable illnesses. In my research I am searching for bacteria in soil with hopes of finding a new antibiotic. My soil sample, obtained from my family's backyard flower garden, showed promising results when a colony successfully inhibited the growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis. After testing to make sure my culture is pure, I intend to continue working to determine if this candidate is in fact unique and able to aid in the fight against resistant bacteria.
