Description
The discovery of antibiotics in the 1940s led to the defeat of infectious disease that once killed generations of humankind. Unfortunately, the misuse and overuse has led to antibiotic resistance, which occurs when antibiotics loose their ability to kill bacterial growth and the bacteria continues to grow, even at the therapeutic dose. According to the CDC, as of 2013, 2 million people are sick every year due to antibiotic resistance infections, with 23,000 people dying each year as a result. Our research project is a small step to solve this devastating problem. My soil samples are unique in a way that I have used both backyard soil and pond soil to see abundant diverse organisms that have potential to form antibiotics. So far, I have four candidates that are inhibiting Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. I am wanting to further evaluate, and It will be interesting to see the diversity of the organisms in different types of soil.
