Terri Easley-Giraldo, Spring 2021 Sabbatical Project
Abstract
This spring 2021 sabbatical project had 3 components:
1) Qualitative research on female political training programs. I conducted research with participants of these training programs to focus on why they were running for office, as well as what barriers they have encountered as they decided to run for office. Most of the research focused on barriers to why women don’t run for political office are those not planning to run for office. This project uniquely focused on women who are planning to run for office someday to investigate the barriers they perceive to exist and how they plan to navigate them.
2) Productive disagreements and civil discourse. In our increasing polarized world, it is important to navigate how to encourage and facilitate productive disagreements. I gave a lecture as part of the Explore the World Series on Productive Disagreements. I have also produced a guide for faculty on how to create class agreements/norms/guidelines.
3) I have been asked by multiple professors across disciplines over the years to give short presentations to their classes on successful presentations before they give class presentations. I produced materials that are shared in Canvas Commons called Presentations 101 that JCCC faculty can embed into their Canvas courses to prepare students for class presentations.
Disciplines
