Description

Due to the rise in multi-drug resistant bacteria, it is vital that there is an effort to discover new classes of antibiotics to combat these drug resistances. Most antibiotics have been found using soil screening and serial dilutions method. I performed multiple serial dilutions of soil gathered from JCCC grounds to do the antibiotic research. I used serial dilution to determine colony forming units per gram of soil and then I took individual bacterial colonies and put them onto master plates. After doing a master plate I did a quadrant streak of a bacterial species from the master plate to isolate it. Next, I did antibiotic screening to determine if any of the bacterial candidates were able to inhibit the growth of the ESKAPE pathogens. Metabolic testing and sequencing will be done to identify the genus of the bacteria.
