Description

Antibiotic resistance has become a significant problem for modern medicine. Bacteria have become more resistant to known antibiotics and funding for antibiotic research has decreased over the past few decades. Most antibiotics have been discovered by screening microbes that have been found in soil. To find my microbe I did a serial dilution and then grew the microbes on an agar plate, then I ran screening tests on 12 bacteria candidates to determine which one candidate I wanted to move forward with. ESKAPE pathogens are what are usually used for screening, but in this research safe relatives were used for testing because they are not virulent like the ESKAPE pathogens. The candidate I chose is named Fries and is from a lake in Spring Hill, Kansas. Fries is able to inhibit Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter baylyi, because it was able to inhibit so many tester strains it was chosen. Fries was then taken into more testing to hopefully find a new antibiotic.
