Description

According to the World Health Organization, the rise of antibiotic resistance all over the world and the lack of new antibiotic discovery is considered one of the biggest public health challenges. Considering this situation, the purpose of my study is to see if the dirt sample from my backyard has bacteria in it that are antibiotic producing. After diluting my soil sample, I was able to isolate bacteria and collect favorable candidates to test against common laboratory strains and safe relatives of ESKAPE pathogens. ESKAPE pathogens are organisms that constitute a threat because they are difficult to treat and are known to resist antibiotics. Then, I isolated my candidate that displayed antibiotic producing characteristics. To identify, the candidate was characterized by staining, DNA sequencing, metabolic and biochemical testing and compared against similar bacteria. From my study, I hope to contribute a new antibiotic to reduce the threat of antibiotic resistance pathogens.
