Abstract

As authoritarian regimes have gained prominence in China and Russia, they have found ways to propagate a digital form of authoritarianism that depends on extensive surveillance, censorship, and the technological advancements that make Big Data possible. An exploration of how digital authoritarianism intersects with systems more aligned with digital democracy is offered here.
