Description

Increasing audience interactivity is often a challenge in various instructional environments. For face-to-face classes, many instructors have implemented the use of interactive learner response systems. However, many institutions cannot implement the use of these systems for larger classes due to budget restraints. In asynchronous online courses, having the answer to the spontaneous and often asked question “Show of Hands…How many of you (Fill in the Blank)?” is no longer easy to ask and share immediate answers with students. Instructors can post the questions in the discussion boards as well as have students take online surveys. Discussion threads can spread answers out over several threads and there is often a lack of visual summary of the data. As far as survey tools, the way the results are displayed, often depend on the learning management system or interface used. Sometimes these survey results are only viewable to the instructor. PollEverywhere is a free tool that can be used in a variety of instructional environments. Whether it is a large traditional face-to-face class or an asynchronous online class, PollEverywhere provides a variety of ways for students to answer quick polls with results displayed immediately and updated in real-time. This presentation will demonstrate how PollEverywhere works, the various interfaces in which students take quick polls, and how to embed widgets into a learning management system interface, such as Blackboard. Mobile phones are encouraged at this presentation!
